“Owl Creek Outdoor Learning Days”

The Schuylkill County Conservancy hosted the Owl Creek Outdoor Learning Days on October 18th and 20th for over 180 students at Owl Creek Reservoir in Tamaqua.   About 140 fifth graders from the Tamaqua Area School District and 40 fifth and sixth graders from Gillingham Charter School learned about native plants and animals and local natural resources.

The students rotated through learning stations about birds, water quality, macroinvertebrates, mammals, and trees.  There was a special presentation on raptors at the end of each day.  The raptor presentation was led by Hawk Mountain on October 18th and Red Creek Wildlife on October 20th.  Volunteers from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Schuylkill Conservation District, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Carbon County Environmental Education Center and Fort Indiantown Gap led the stations.

Students learned about their environment first hand through hands-on activities.  The diverse forest and habitat found at the Owl Creek Reservoir made it great site for the Learning Days.  Funding for this project was generously provided by the Schuylkill Area Community Foundation.

Bicentennial Tree Project – April 2011
In honor of Schuylkill County’s Bicentennial and Arbor Day, the Schuylkill County Conservancy launched the Bicentennial Tree Project by distributing 75 trees on Tuesday, April 26th to local municipalities, civic groups and schools. The Bicentennial Tree Project will bring beauty to the county’s public areas, teach volunteers how to care for trees, and provide a living legacy
of our natural heritage for future generations to enjoy!  This project would not have been possible without the help of SCC’s numerous partners:
  • The Pottsville Shade Tree Commission
  • The Northeast Tree Association
  • The Penn State Schuylkill Master Gardeners
  • DCNR Bureau of Forestry
  • Fanelli Trucking
  • Funding provided by the Schuylkill Area Community Foundation
